Cross-domain tracking in Google Analytics allows you to track two different domains from a single Google Analytics account. Sessions are measured using cookies and these cookies contain the Client ID value. Cookies store data on a per-domain basis but in Cross-domain tracking, this ClientID value is shared between the two domains by modifying the Analytics tracking code for both domains. The source domain shares the ClientID data with the destination domain in the form of URL parameters that both domains can access.
